Monthly Book Review and/or White Paper

Right Person – Right Job: Guess or Know
Chuck Russell’s “Right Person – Right Job: Guess or Know” is an interesting and helpful book regarding the process and effects of hiring the right employees. Russell provides a brief look at the “old’ process of hiring and how it has dramatically affected employees performance, or lack of performance. He discusses how businesses have placed their focus on employees who will never be high performers at the expense of neglecting mediocre performers who have the potential to be high performers if the proper investments were made. 5C’s™ to Effective Decision Making
“Life itself can be seen as a continuous series of both large and small decisions. The ultimate quality or success of our lives, therefore, depends upon the cumulative effect of the individual decisions we make at each moment of our lives.”  Every organization, group and individual makes numerous decisions each day.  Unfortunately, not every organization or group agrees on how they will make decisions.  Expanding upon common decision making practices, Rising Sun has identified five forms or styles of decision making (The 5C's™: A Model For Group Decision Making) which are designed to help groups determine how best to approach various types of decision making situations.  (For complete white paper,” click here.)

Story/Parable of the Month:

Carry a Long Pole Through the Gate
A man from Lu tried to enter the City Gate carrying a long pole. First, he held the pole upright, but the pole could not pass through the gate. Then he held it horizontally; but it still could not pass through. He was stumped. By and by an old man came along and said to him, "I am not a Saint; but I have a lot of practical experience. Why not cut the pole in two at the middle?"

So the man cut the pole in two at the middle.

The moral of this story…

Anyone, competent or not, can give advice. It's up to you to seek good advice, which is not always easy.

Monthly Tips: Employee Engagement

According to the Gallup Organization, 71% of workers rate themselves as either Not Engaged or Actively Disengaged and 66% neither identify with nor feel motivated to drive their employer’s business goals and objectives.

Most experts agree that involving employees in critical organizational decisions has a positive impact on both employee engagement and morale for all of the following reasons:

  • Enables decision makers to set clear boundaries for involvement of others.
  • Clarifies accountability and decision making authority.
  • Provides members with guidelines on whether/how to be involved in decisions.
  • Lets people know what to expect and what is expected of them.
  • Develops support, ownership, and commitment of final decisions.

The following decision making process has been designed specifically to offer employees an appreciable level of involvement in decisions affecting both them and their organization:

  1. Define the decision to be made.
  2. Determine the desired future goal or outcome of the decision.
  3. Clarify the variables influencing the decision.
  4. Determine the best decision making method for the situation (ex: Rising Sun’s 5C’s).
  5. Generate as many possible options/opportunities as possible.
  6. Identify the pros and cons of each of the options/opportunities generated.
  7. Determine the rationale for the decision.
  8. Make the decision.
  9. Communicate the decision and rationale to all those involved in and/or affected by the decision.
  10. Evaluate the process used in making the decision
  11. Evaluate the quality of the outcome of the decision made (follow-up).
